The “Illusion” Of Freedom
Shifting from ‘subjective actions’ to ‘objective outcomes’ reveals our “truth.”
“I’m free to do what I want, any old time…”
So sung the Rolling Stones in 1965. It was a mantra call of a burgeoning generation throwing off the shackles of their repressive parents. Rebellion was in vogue, psychedelics opened the mind up to new worlds, and New Age theorists hypothesized about an evolved state of being. The restriction of the boomer generation gave way to a new form of personal ‘freedom’ and physical autonomy.
To understand the impact of this cultural rise in social and personal “freedom,” let’s look at the definition of the word “freedom”: (according to dictionary.com)
FREEDOM:
1. the state of being free or at liberty rather than in confinement or under physical restraint.
2. exemption from external control, interference, regulation, etc.
3. the power to determine action without restraint.
4. personal liberty, as opposed to bondage or slavery:
Liberty as opposed to bondage.
Opportunity as opposed to restriction.
Action as opposed to blockage.
